A Note on the 2021 Strasbourg Fire

No OVHcloud review is complete without addressing the March 2021 Strasbourg data center fire, which destroyed SBG2 and damaged SBG1. Millions of websites went offline, and some customers permanently lost data. OVHcloud responded by implementing fire-resistant construction standards, improving backup procedures, and offering affected customers credits and free backup storage. Four years later, OVHcloud's infrastructure investments have meaningfully addressed the weaknesses that fire exposed — but the incident remains a reminder to always maintain off-site backups regardless of provider.

Performance Testing

TTFB (Time to First Byte)

Average TTFB from our 90-day monitoring across 3 test locations:

• EU West (London) — 85ms average
• US East (Virginia) — 155ms average
• Asia (Singapore) — 420ms average

Global average TTFB: ~220ms. This places OVHcloud between premium providers (Hetzner ~180ms, DigitalOcean ~170ms) and budget providers (Contabo ~380ms). The EU performance is strong thanks to OVHcloud's extensive European network backbone. US performance is solid from their Virginia DC. Asia latency is higher due to network routing — deploying in their Singapore DC would improve this significantly.

Uptime Results

Measured uptime: 99.95% over 90 days. This translates to roughly 22 minutes of total downtime across two incidents:

• 15-minute planned maintenance window (network upgrade, scheduled overnight)
• 7-minute unplanned API timeout (VPS remained accessible, but management panel was unreachable)

99.95% uptime is respectable and above their 99.9% SLA guarantee. It's not quite at Hetzner's 99.98% level, but significantly better than Contabo's 99.92%. OVHcloud's anti-DDoS infrastructure (VAC — Vacuum) provides always-on protection that prevents network-level attacks from causing downtime.

CPU Benchmark

Running Geekbench 6 on the VPS Starter (2 vCPU AMD EPYC):

CPU performance is solid — roughly 85-90% of Hetzner's scores and 80-85% of DigitalOcean's premium droplets. OVHcloud uses AMD EPYC processors across their VPS line, which provide good performance-per-watt. The slight performance gap compared to Hetzner likely reflects different oversubscription ratios and CPU generation differences between data centers.

Disk I/O

NVMe SSD performance on VPS Starter (20GB):

• Sequential read: 1,950 MB/s (good)
• Sequential write: 850 MB/s (adequate)
• Random 4K read IOPS: 52,000 (between Contabo's 42K and Hetzner's 64K)

Disk performance lands solidly in the middle of the pack — better than Contabo, slightly behind Hetzner. The NVMe storage is local, not network-attached, which ensures consistent latency. The 20GB on the Starter plan is quite limited, but OVHcloud offers additional block storage at competitive rates.

OVHcloud offers tiered support. Standard support (free) provides ticket and community forum access with 8-24 hour response times. Our experience with standard support showed 6-12 hour ticket responses — faster than Contabo, slower than Hetzner. Support quality was generally competent for infrastructure issues.
