OVHcloud Overview
OVHcloud is a French cloud computing company founded in 1999 by Octave Klaba in Roubaix, France. They're the largest European cloud provider and the third-largest globally by physical server count, operating over 450,000 servers across 40+ data centers. What makes OVHcloud unique in the hosting industry is that they design, manufacture, and cool their own servers — a vertically integrated approach that allows them to offer aggressive pricing without sacrificing hardware quality.
I purchased OVHcloud's VPS Starter plan and tested it for 90+ days running a WordPress site, a Flask API, and Docker containers. All benchmarks come from my own account.
The OVHcloud Difference: Own Infrastructure
Unlike DigitalOcean, Vultr, or Linode (which lease or colocate in third-party data centers), OVHcloud builds and operates everything from the ground up. They manufacture custom server chassis, develop proprietary water-cooling systems, and even build their own fiber optic network spanning 50+ countries. This vertical integration gives them a cost advantage — they don't pay a middleman for any component of their infrastructure stack.
The downside of this approach is complexity. OVHcloud's product catalog is vast and sometimes confusing, with multiple overlapping product lines (VPS, Public Cloud, Bare Metal, Hosted Private Cloud, Web Hosting) that can overwhelm newcomers. Their documentation, while comprehensive, has a steeper learning curve than DigitalOcean's beginner-friendly tutorials.
Data Center Locations
OVHcloud operates data centers across:
- France — Roubaix, Gravelines, Strasbourg (primary EU locations)
- Germany — Frankfurt, Limburg
- United Kingdom — London
- Canada — Beauharnois (Quebec)
- United States — Vint Hill (Virginia), Hillsboro (Oregon)
- Australia — Sydney
- Singapore — Singapore
- India — Mumbai
With 40+ data centers across 4 continents, OVHcloud offers the broadest geographic coverage among budget cloud providers. This is a significant advantage for global applications requiring low-latency access from multiple regions.
A Note on the 2021 Strasbourg Fire
No OVHcloud review is complete without addressing the March 2021 Strasbourg data center fire, which destroyed SBG2 and damaged SBG1. Millions of websites went offline, and some customers permanently lost data. OVHcloud responded by implementing fire-resistant construction standards, improving backup procedures, and offering affected customers credits and free backup storage. Four years later, OVHcloud's infrastructure investments have meaningfully addressed the weaknesses that fire exposed — but the incident remains a reminder to always maintain off-site backups regardless of provider.
Performance Testing
TTFB (Time to First Byte)
Average TTFB from our 90-day monitoring across 3 test locations:
- EU West (London) — 85ms average
- US East (Virginia) — 155ms average
- Asia (Singapore) — 420ms average
Global average TTFB: ~220ms. This places OVHcloud between premium providers (Hetzner ~180ms, DigitalOcean ~170ms) and budget providers (Contabo ~380ms). The EU performance is strong thanks to OVHcloud's extensive European network backbone. US performance is solid from their Virginia DC. Asia latency is higher due to network routing — deploying in their Singapore DC would improve this significantly.
Uptime Results
Measured uptime: 99.95% over 90 days. This translates to roughly 22 minutes of total downtime across two incidents:
- 15-minute planned maintenance window (network upgrade, scheduled overnight)
- 7-minute unplanned API timeout (VPS remained accessible, but management panel was unreachable)
99.95% uptime is respectable and above their 99.9% SLA guarantee. It's not quite at Hetzner's 99.98% level, but significantly better than Contabo's 99.92%. OVHcloud's anti-DDoS infrastructure (VAC — Vacuum) provides always-on protection that prevents network-level attacks from causing downtime.
CPU Benchmark
Running Geekbench 6 on the VPS Starter (2 vCPU AMD EPYC):
- Single-core: 1,420 (vs. Hetzner CX22: 1,580, DigitalOcean: 1,650)
- Multi-core: 2,650 (vs. Hetzner CX22: 2,890, DigitalOcean: 3,100)
CPU performance is solid — roughly 85-90% of Hetzner's scores and 80-85% of DigitalOcean's premium droplets. OVHcloud uses AMD EPYC processors across their VPS line, which provide good performance-per-watt. The slight performance gap compared to Hetzner likely reflects different oversubscription ratios and CPU generation differences between data centers.
Disk I/O
NVMe SSD performance on VPS Starter (20GB):
- Sequential read: 1,950 MB/s (good)
- Sequential write: 850 MB/s (adequate)
- Random 4K read IOPS: 52,000 (between Contabo's 42K and Hetzner's 64K)
- Random 4K write IOPS: 38,000 (decent)
Disk performance lands solidly in the middle of the pack — better than Contabo, slightly behind Hetzner. The NVMe storage is local, not network-attached, which ensures consistent latency. The 20GB on the Starter plan is quite limited, but OVHcloud offers additional block storage at competitive rates.
Network Speed
OVHcloud's network is one of their strongest assets:
- Port speed: 500 Mbps on VPS Starter (1 Gbps on higher tiers)
- Download: 485 Mbps sustained
- Upload: 480 Mbps sustained
- Included traffic: Unlimited (unmetered on VPS plans)
- Own fiber backbone: 50+ countries connected via OVHcloud-owned fiber
Unlimited bandwidth is a significant advantage over competitors who cap traffic at 1-20TB/mo. OVHcloud's own fiber network means they control routing end-to-end, resulting in consistent performance without the variability that comes from relying on third-party transit providers. The anti-DDoS VAC system also scrubs malicious traffic at the network edge without impacting legitimate throughput.
Features & Control Panel
OVHcloud Manager
OVHcloud's management interface — the OVHcloud Manager — is functional but dense. It consolidates management of all OVHcloud products (domains, VPS, dedicated servers, Public Cloud, email) into a single dashboard. The VPS section provides server management, monitoring graphs, reinstallation tools, and backup configuration. The interface has improved significantly since 2023, but it still feels more complex than DigitalOcean or Hetzner's streamlined dashboards.
API & Developer Tools
- OVHcloud API (v6) — Comprehensive REST API covering all products. Well-documented with an API console for testing. More complex than Hetzner's API due to the broader product range.
- Terraform provider — Official OVHcloud Terraform provider for infrastructure-as-code management
- OpenStack compatibility — Public Cloud products are OpenStack-native, supporting standard OpenStack APIs and tools (Horizon, Nova, Neutron)
- CLI tools —
ovh-clifor command-line management, plus standard OpenStack CLI for Public Cloud
Security Features
- Anti-DDoS VAC — Always-on DDoS protection that scrubs malicious traffic at the network edge. Automatically activates when attacks are detected. Included free on all plans.
- Firewall — Network-level firewall configurable through the Manager or API
- Backup storage — Automated backup options with configurable retention
- KMS (Key Management) — Available for Public Cloud workloads requiring encryption key management
VPS-Specific Features
- Automated backups — Optional automated daily backups (additional cost on lower tiers, included on higher tiers)
- Snapshot — One snapshot included per VPS for system state preservation
- Monitoring — Basic CPU, RAM, and disk monitoring through the Manager
- IPv4 + IPv6 — One IPv4 and one /128 IPv6 address included
- OS templates — Ubuntu, Debian, CentOS, AlmaLinux, Rocky, Fedora, Windows Server (+fee)
What's Missing on VPS
- No private networking on VPS — Private networks (vRack) are available on Public Cloud and dedicated servers but not on VPS plans. Multi-server VPS architectures communicate over public IPs.
- No load balancers for VPS — Managed load balancing is a Public Cloud feature only
- No managed databases on VPS — Available on Public Cloud plans
- Complex product segmentation — Features available on Public Cloud aren't always available on VPS, creating confusion about what you can actually use
Support
OVHcloud offers tiered support. Standard support (free) provides ticket and community forum access with 8-24 hour response times. Premium support plans add phone support, faster SLAs, and a dedicated account manager. Our experience with standard support showed 6-12 hour ticket responses — faster than Contabo, slower than Hetzner. Support quality was generally competent for infrastructure issues. Documentation is comprehensive but sprawling, covering their massive product catalog with varying levels of clarity.

With a 24-month commitment, the VPS Starter drops to roughly $2.63/mo — making it one of the cheapest VPS plans available anywhere. However, you're locked in for 2 years with limited upgrade flexibility.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Unlimited bandwidth on all VPS plans — No traffic caps or overage charges. Perfect for media streaming, CDN origins, and bandwidth-heavy applications. This alone sets OVHcloud apart from most competitors.
- Own infrastructure end-to-end — Custom servers, water cooling, own fiber backbone across 50+ countries. Infrastructure quality isn't dependent on third-party providers.
- Broadest data center coverage among budget providers — 40+ DCs across Europe, North America, Asia-Pacific, and India. Deploy close to your users regardless of geography.
- Always-on anti-DDoS (VAC) — Network-level DDoS protection included free, scrubbing traffic at the edge before it reaches your server. Effective against volumetric attacks.
- Competitive pricing with commitment discounts — Already cheap at $3.50/mo, drops to ~$2.63/mo with 24-month commitment. Strong value for long-term projects.
- OpenStack compatibility — Public Cloud products use standard OpenStack APIs, enabling portability and familiar tooling for teams already using OpenStack.
Cons
- Complex product segmentation — VPS, Public Cloud, Bare Metal, and Hosted Private Cloud have different feature sets. Private networking and managed services are only on Public Cloud, creating confusion.
- No private networking on VPS — Multi-server VPS architectures must communicate over public IPs. This limits security and adds latency for distributed applications.
- 20GB storage on Starter is very limited — You'll likely need additional storage quickly. Block storage is only available on Public Cloud, not VPS.
- 2021 fire aftermath still lingers — While OVHcloud has invested heavily in fire safety improvements, the Strasbourg incident destroyed customer data and eroded trust that takes years to fully rebuild.
- Manager interface is dense — Functional but overwhelming for newcomers. Less intuitive than DigitalOcean or Hetzner's clean dashboards.
- Support response times inconsistent — Standard support ranges from 6-24 hours. Premium support plans add cost. Not ideal for urgent production issues.
- No hourly billing on VPS — Unlike Hetzner's hourly-with-monthly-cap model, OVHcloud VPS is billed monthly. Less flexible for short-term workloads (Public Cloud does offer hourly billing).
Who Should Use OVHcloud
- Ideal for: Bandwidth-heavy applications (media streaming, file hosting, CDN origins), EU-based businesses needing GDPR compliance, global deployments requiring diverse DC locations, OpenStack-native teams, long-term projects where commitment discounts maximize savings
- Avoid for: Beginners wanting simple setup, multi-server VPS architectures needing private networking, teams requiring instant support response, short-term or experimental projects (no hourly billing on VPS), organizations where the 2021 fire incident is a dealbreaker
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Is OVHcloud safe after the 2021 data center fire?
OVHcloud has invested heavily in fire safety since the 2021 Strasbourg incident. New data centers use fire-resistant construction, improved detection systems, and enhanced fire suppression. They also improved their backup infrastructure and communication procedures. While no provider is immune to incidents, OVHcloud's response and infrastructure investments have meaningfully addressed the vulnerabilities. Always maintain your own off-site backups regardless of provider.
How does OVHcloud compare to Hetzner?
Hetzner offers better per-dollar performance (faster TTFB, higher uptime, lower prices at equivalent tiers) and a more polished developer experience (better API, Terraform provider, console). OVHcloud's advantages are unlimited bandwidth (vs. Hetzner's 20TB cap), broader data center coverage (40+ vs. 3 locations), and OpenStack compatibility. Choose Hetzner for performance and developer experience. Choose OVHcloud for global coverage and unlimited bandwidth.
Does OVHcloud offer managed services?
Managed services (databases, Kubernetes, load balancers) are available on OVHcloud's Public Cloud product line — not on VPS plans. If you need managed databases or Kubernetes, you'll need to use Public Cloud instances instead of VPS, which have a different pricing model (hourly billing, different specs). This product segmentation is one of OVHcloud's most confusing aspects for new users.
What is OVHcloud's anti-DDoS VAC system?
VAC (Vacuum) is OVHcloud's proprietary anti-DDoS infrastructure that provides always-on protection for all servers. It operates at the network edge, analyzing incoming traffic and filtering malicious packets before they reach your server. VAC handles Layer 3/4 volumetric attacks automatically. For Layer 7 (application) attacks, you'll need to configure additional protection through a WAF or Cloudflare. VAC is included free on all plans.
Can I migrate from OVHcloud VPS to their Public Cloud?
There's no automated migration path between OVHcloud VPS and Public Cloud — they're separate product lines with different architectures. Migration requires manually provisioning a Public Cloud instance, transferring data via SCP/rsync, and reconfiguring your applications. Consider starting with Public Cloud if you anticipate needing managed services or private networking, as migrating later adds complexity.
Does OVHcloud offer hourly billing?
Hourly billing is available on OVHcloud's Public Cloud instances but not on VPS plans. VPS plans are billed monthly (or with 12/24-month commitments for discounts). If you need short-term servers for testing, development, or burst workloads, use Public Cloud instances with hourly billing. For long-running servers, VPS with commitment discounts offers better value.
The Bottom Line
