We do not accept free hosting accounts. We do not copy specs from marketing pages. Every review starts with us purchasing a hosting plan at the regular advertised price, setting up a standardized WordPress site, and testing it for a minimum of 90 days. Here is exactly what happens during each test cycle.

We purchase the recommended plan at full price using a standard checkout process — no press accounts, no special treatment, no coupon codes that regular customers cannot access. We go through the same signup experience you would.

Ease of Use

Dashboard usability, onboarding experience, documentation quality, and learning curve. We evaluate whether a beginner could set up a website without external tutorials. Lower weight because ease of use matters less than performance and reliability for most use cases.

What We DON'T Do

Accept free hosting accounts

Free "press" accounts often receive preferential treatment — better server placement, priority support, and more resources. Our tests reflect what paying customers actually get.

Let commissions influence rankings

Our reviewers do not know affiliate commission rates during the testing and writing process. Rankings are determined solely by test data and scoring criteria.

Copy specs from marketing pages

Marketing claims like "unlimited bandwidth" or "99.99% uptime guarantee" are not facts — they are advertising. We verify everything through our own testing.

Recommend untested hosts

We will never recommend a hosting provider we have not personally purchased, set up, and tested for a full 90-day cycle. No exceptions.

Consistent Timing

Methodology FAQ

Why 90 days? Isn't that excessive?

Short-term tests (a few days or weeks) can be misleading. Hosting performance fluctuates based on server load, time of day, and maintenance windows. A provider might look great during a quiet week and terrible during a traffic surge. 90 days gives us enough data to account for natural variation and seasonal patterns. It also allows time for multiple support tests and a realistic assessment of the day-to-day experience.

Why WordPress? What about other platforms?

WordPress powers over 40% of all websites. By using WordPress as our standardized test platform, our results are directly relevant to the largest possible audience. The plugin and theme configuration we use (WooCommerce, Yoast, etc.) represents a realistic workload that tests the server under conditions similar to what most users will experience.

Do you test VPS and dedicated hosting too?

Our primary focus is shared and managed WordPress hosting, as these are the most common hosting types for individual website owners and small businesses. We do test VPS plans from select providers and note when VPS offers significantly better value. Dedicated server testing follows a separate protocol optimized for that hosting category.

How do you handle providers that change during a test?

If a hosting provider makes significant changes during our 90-day test — such as a server infrastructure upgrade, pricing change, or feature addition — we note the change and its date. If the change is substantial enough to invalidate earlier data (for example, a complete server migration), we may restart the test. Our reviews always specify the exact dates the testing was conducted and what version of the service was tested.

Why do you weight Performance at 30% but Ease of Use at only 10%?

Our weighting reflects what matters most to users in the long run. A host with a confusing dashboard is inconvenient during setup, but you only set up your site once. A host with poor performance or reliability affects every visitor, every day, for as long as you use it. Performance and features have a much larger long-term impact on your success than the initial learning curve. That said, we do call out ease-of-use issues prominently in our reviews for users who value simplicity.
